Relief carving live trees

Hi,


I've seen a few people do this. Tree spirits and the like.

What do I coat it with to stop disease and insects?



What are my chances of the tree dying? I don't want to kill any trees.

I thought I would do a few at my grandparents cottage for them but my luck it will backfire.
